Easter is just around the corner. What does it mean to you? Do you have any family traditions? If you go to a supermarket right now you’d think it was a holy festival dedicated to chocolate!
When I was a child, my parents used to hide a chocolate Easter bunny in the garden. We’d follow the easter egg hunt, collecting little chocolate eggs along the way, until we found the nest with the big Easter bunny, along with some other goodies. Of course I continued this tradition with my son too.
In Germany, it can sometimes be quite warm at this time of year. One year, when I was maybe 7, by the time I finally found the bunny, his ears were all melted. I didn’t find it particularly funny at the time because it meant less chocolate!
What are your Easter traditions and do they involve chocolate? If they do, how do you eat it? Do you eat your chocolate treats all in one go or can you save them for later and eat them bit by bit?
I used to have no control; my Easter bunny had complete control over me!
Every time I went into my bedroom, I felt like he was calling me to eat a bit more of him. So very quickly the bunny would disappear, one ear after the other, until his cute little face was gone. When I looked at my sister’s bunny, she had barely touched him. How was that possible? I honestly thought I had no control over how much I ate.
A life without sugar
Fast forward to now and I am completely off sugar. That doesn’t mean I don’t eat anything sweet, but if you’re a sugar addict, you probably wouldn’t find what I eat sweet enough. You see, your taste buds adjust when you wean yourself off sugar. Suddenly you’re able to taste the natural sweetness in your food, without adding sugar. For example, almond butter, coconut in any form and berries. That is what I like to use as sweetness in my life now. For example, I love to blend coconut milk, almond butter, berries and a tablespoon of raw cacao powder (see my recipes on my website) to make a lovely dessert. Honestly, it is so good!
I highly recommend giving life without sugar a try. There are so many health advantages to cutting out sugars (including bread, pasta, potato and rice). Sugar in any form not only increases your insulin levels, introducing diabetes and obesity but also creates inflammation in your body, leading to all kinds of health issues long-term.
So what do we do about all that Easter chocolate?
Well, remember you are only human! If you eat a bit of chocolate once in a while, you’ll be fine. Just remember not to over-indulge, if you can, and let your body get it out of your system afterwards.
My advice is:
