I speak to and work with so many people who say similar things about their relationship with their health and eating. Whilst they have a goal they want to achieve - for example feeling fitter, having more energy or losing weight - whatever they do never seems to result in a permanent change. They may reach their goals by going on a diet, or exercising more, but this ‘regime’ they put themselves on doesn’t usually last. They often end up right where they started - and this is why I do what I do! I have a completely different way to look at your relationship with yourself, and find a way for you to feel happy and healthy in your own skin. I’d love to share an incredible client transformation story with you, which shows how differently I can support you on your journey.
A previous client of mine used to try all kinds of weight loss programmes before she came to see me. They usually worked short term, but she disliked having to go on the scales and feeling judged when she didn't reach her weekly targets. After leaving these kinds of programmes, it didn't take long to fall back into her old way of eating.
Through our work together on my 121 programme, her diet shifted to eating more wholesome food with far less animal produce. She lost weight, had far more energy and felt better in herself. Her relationship with food and eating and, most of all, with herself improved. Her favourite white jeans fit again.
Then… she went on holiday to visit some friends and everything went pear-shaped!
You see, her friends’ attitude to food was quite different - they often went for unhealthy options. They ate out together nearly every night and the menu in the restaurants didn't give her a great deal of choice. My client said she soon felt sluggish, bloated and unwell. As much as she enjoyed spending time with her friends, she looked forward to coming home and getting back into her new way of eating.
When she came to see me, first we celebrated that she noticed the effect the food had on her physical wellbeing. That was already a step forward! How many people eat a certain food and think it is normal to feel tired, sluggish and bloated afterwards? Many don’t believe there is much we can do about that, looking for excuses such as it being in their genes or just part of getting older. However, my client was now so tuned in that she could see this way of eating didn’t suit her any longer.
As we all know, it takes a lot to stand up to our friends and family and say: “No thank you - I don't want to eat that way anymore.” It takes time to educate the people around you and explain why you don’t want to feel uncomfortable in yourself any longer. You don’t want to feel bloated, you want to feel and be more healthy. Of course, when you do, they will eventually understand. Maybe they will even follow your example? Why not be the instigator of something new and give them a copy of my book?
One thing we discussed in our last session was understanding what to do when eating out. What can you do when your choices are limited? You have a few options:
Another thing that really helped my client feel better while she was away was that she still could continue with her fasting. Fasting has amazing healing benefits, including supporting you to stay on track with your weight and lowering your blood sugar and insulin.
But the biggest difference for my client was once she got home: there was no judgment. She didn’t tell herself she had failed. She reflected on her holiday and went straight back to eating in the way she knows works best for her. How amazing is that?! For me, that is the real transformation.
Normally we go on holiday, our diet changes and we feel disappointed with ourselves. When we come back home we find it terribly difficult to get motivated again. Reflecting on what we really want is a great way to get motivated, but also remembering that life happens! At the end of the day we are human, life has its ups and downs. We are a species designed for fasting and feasting. You are the one who sets the rules, so you are the one who can break them and pick them up whenever you like.
It is your life, make it fun!
As you can see, there is so much more to a healthier lifestyle than depriving yourself of food for a few weeks and counting calories. It is a lifestyle change that takes time and most of all, a better understanding of yourself. When you learn to be less judgmental with yourself but more loving and kind, when you understand that it is not the food calling you but that you are having a “thought” about the food “you” want to eat, the choice is all yours.
