How often have you heard or thought that? It’s how we have always thought - that our ancestral genes are responsible for our future health. We believe that our health is out of our control.
Let’s get technical here.
Our genes are called DNA. Then we have RNA. RNA are the messengers carrying information from our DNA into our cells where they will be transcribed into different protein patterns.
MicroRNAs turn on and off a wide range of genes by silencing messenger RNA.
This microRNA is transported in virus- sized exosomes, or specialised, membrane-enclosed, nano-sized vesicles secreted by all plants, animals, bacteria, and fungal cells.
MicroRNA survives the digestive process intact and acts like a software, altering the expression of our hardware called gene expression.
This discovery in biology is showing us how the food we eat is so important for our health.
MIcroRNA has a potential for cross-kingdom regulation of gene expression, which means plants and animals can talk to one another’s genes with profound impacts on their expression.
This shows us we live in close relationship with our environment. We are not separate. Our health depends on the quality of food we eat. We can rewrite the functionality of our genomic hardware to be health promoting or health degrading, depending on our food choices and the impact it has on RNA.
Vegetables grown organically in healthy soil will have far higher levels of antioxidants and micronutrients than industrially produced vegetables.
When plants grow more naturally, they experience more stress. The plant produces more micronutrients as a response. It is their way of survival. Polyphenols produced by stressed plants activate fungal and animal sirtuin enzymes, an important enzyme to fight human disease.
Exosomes and the microRNAs that they shuttle are some reasons that fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices that come directly from the earth into your kitchen, set the stage for healing.
Hippocrates said “Be Food be our medicine”
How far have we moved away from that?
Over-farmed, processed foods, packed in plastic, travelling and lying on the shelf for days, if not weeks, before we consume them, are not providing us with all of nature’s healing benefits.
The result is a weakened immune system that cannot defend us from everyday stresses; viruses, pollution from the air and the chemicals we use on our skin and in and around our house.
It is never too late to live a healthier life.
Our cells are working hard every minute of the day to repair the damage that is done to keep us in a healthy equilibrium. Your cells are changing and renew all the time.
There is always hope.
Understanding that, would you not like to start today to live in synergy with nature, feel more energised and full of life?
